CHARACTER DESIGN BASICS
1.THE PRINCIPLES OF CHARACTER DESIGN
shape
Shape plays a crucial role in character design, and different shapes can convey different personality traits and emotions.
colour
Color also plays an important role in identifying and distinguishing basic features of heroes, villains, and even background characters. Different colors convey different emotions and are easy for the audience to empathize with. For example, red might convey passion or danger, while blue might convey calm and reliability.
stress
In character design, emphasizing certain characteristics can help a character stand out and be memorable. For example, a character may have unusually large eyes or a distinctive hairstyle, which can make the character more recognizable.
Compare
Contrast can make character design more appealing. For example, contrasting colors, shapes, or materials can be used to add visual impact and layer to a character. The use of contrast can direct the audience's attention and make certain parts of the character stand out more.
harmony
Despite the need for contrast and emphasis, the overall design of the characters still needed harmony. Each element should complement each other to create a unified visual effect. Harmonious design can make the characters look more complete and coordinated.
1.By using bright and dim tones, different parts of an object or character can be highlighted, giving a three-dimensional visual effect.
2. Cast shadows and control contrast
Can make the subject more three-dimensional, increase visual depth.
3. Positive space
Positive space refers to the subject or object of interest in the visualization. For example, in a painting, a person or object is positive space.
4. Negative space
It is usually used to set off positive space, making it more prominent.
5. The contrast between negative space and positive space
The subject can be made more prominent, thus enhancing the visual experience of the audience.
The visual narrative of animation design refers to telling a story through images and actions, including elements such as character expressions, movements, and picture layouts, to convey the storyline and emotions.
Visual flow refers to the continuity and fluidity of the screen in animation, including the transition of the screen and the continuity of the action, which can guide the audience's line of sight and make the story more natural and coherent.
Visual balance refers to the balanced distribution of various elements in the animation screen, including color, composition, action, etc., forming a harmonious visual experience in the screen, which will not make the audience feel cluttered or uncomfortable.
Visual hierarchy refers to the arrangement of each element in the animation scene, including the design and coordination of the foreground, middle and background, through this arrangement to create a sense of depth and three-dimensional sense, to present a richer visual experience for the audience.

Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's classic Black Cat, this illustration uses a minimalist style with a strong contrast of red and black to highlight the theme of the work. The red door symbolizes the entrance to the unknown and danger, while the black cat represents mystery, gloom and foreboding. The background of the illustration uses a gradual transition from deep black to gray space, creating an atmosphere of depression, unease and suspense, echoing the gloomy and terrifying themes common to Poe's work.
