Task 2: Visual Analysis and Ideation

Title: Jubilee Procession in a Cornish Village
      Artist: George Sherwood Hunter
      Year: 1897
      Size: H 130 x W 216 cm
      · Observation
This is a painting by artist George Sherwood Hunt of a parade of lights held in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, the first diamond jubilee in British history. The painting depicts a group of girls and women in white dresses holding brightly lit lanterns as they take part in a nighttime parade. The lantern is one of the visual focal points of the whole painting. Its light appears warm and bright in the night. Compared with the dim surrounding environment, it highlights the layered sense of the painting and gives the whole work a stronger story atmosphere. The painting has a strong sense of space from far to near the whole painting. This perspective effect makes the picture more three-dimensional.
      · Analysis
      Figure 1.1Analysis Draft

      Contrast:
Contrast between warm and cold colors: the warm colors of the lantern (red, orange, yellow) and the cool colors of the background (blue, green, gray) form a strong contrast, making the lighting effect more prominent.
Light and dark contrast: the overall picture is relatively dim, but the light area of the lantern creates a local highlight, making the picture more three-dimensional.
      Movement & Rhythm:
The characters are arranged in a diagonal layout, from the lower left corner to the upper right corner, creating a smooth sense of movement.
The movement of the crowd, such as the walking posture and the movement of holding lanterns, enhances the rhythm of the picture.
      Unity & Harmony:
The color of the picture is coordinated and unified, and the overall picture maintains a sense of harmony, which is highlighted by the unified white clothing of the characters and the uniform distribution of light sources.
      Balance
The number of people on the left and right sides of the picture is relatively balanced, making the entire composition stable.
      Emphasis
Lanterns are the visual focal point of the picture, and their bright colors and light attract the viewer's attention.
      Space & Depth
The use of perspective in the painting, the foreground figures are larger, the background figures gradually shrink, enhance the sense of space.
Make the distant scene appear hazy, increase the sense of the picture layer.
      ·Interpreta
The painting depicts a traditional festival in some part of Europe, while the painting of a
parade of lights is a symbol of hope, unity and cultural inheritance. Girls wear white dresses, which may represent innocence or ceremonial attire, while the light of lanterns symbolizes hope, happiness, or remembrance of the past. The author may want to convey the joy and happiness of the traditional festival of the people at that time through the painting. Through this feeling, the whole picture creates a poetic atmosphere, and people who look at the painting feel the peace and warmth of the festival.

Contrast principle: The little girl contrasts the size of the tall lighthouse, emphasizing the distance of the journey and the importance of the lighthouse.
Alignment and unity principle: The road, lighthouse and girl are vertically aligned in the picture to unify the visual focus. The style of the screen elements (buildings, ships) is unified to maintain visual consistency.
Principle of symmetry and balance: The left and right sides are arranged symmetrically through ships, mountains and other elements, and the picture is stable and harmonious. The lighthouse is centered to enhance the balance of the picture. The curved road acts as a guide line to guide the viewer's sight from the girl to the lighthouse, enhancing the depth of the space.

      · Sketch 2

      Fig1.5 Sketch 2

Contrast principle: The rainbow road and the mountains on both sides form a strong contrast, highlighting the path to the light. The contrast between the little girl and the vast environment reinforces the sense of loneliness and adventure.
The principle of unity and repetition: repeat the use of curves (road, distant mountain outline), maintain the unity of the picture style, increase the sense of rhythm.
Principle of symmetry and balance: The rainbow road is centered, and the mountains on both sides are balanced, creating a stable and symmetrical composition.
Principle of visual guidance: Rainbow path as a strong visual guide line, from the foreground girl to the distant circular aperture, symbolizing the goal or dream.

                                                          Feedback
      Week3:
General Feedback: I am not clear about the art work writer I chose. I need to re-select a website that can explain the pictures clearly and make modifications
Specific Feedback: Make changes to task1's art work

      Week4:
General Feedback: The Analysis teacher gave me more ideas about the paintings I selected in task2, and asked me to complete .
Specific Feedback: Continue to complete task2.

      REFLECTION
In Task 2, I learned how to analyze art works systematically, including observation, analysis of design principles and interpretation. This process made me realize that art is not only the presentation of the overall beauty, but also the design logic and creative intention contained in the details. Through careful study of the work, I understand how the artist uses elements such as color and composition. This kind of in-depth analysis not only improves my ability to appreciate art, but also provides an important visual reference and inspiration source for my creation. This learning process not only deepened my understanding of design principles, but also allowed me to consciously apply these knowledge to my personal creation, which enhanced the expression and artistry of my works.
